Williams.
Serena Williams spent some of her childhood in
Compton, California, where she and her sister Venus Williams were steered
towards tennis at a very young age. Both girls were home schooled in order to
utilize more time available for practice. Her father, Richard Williams, and
mother Oracene Price served as their official coaches. When Serena was nine,
she and her family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, so they could attend Rick
Macy's Tennis Academy, who provide her with additional coaching. Macy didn't
always agree with the William's father, but respected that he treated his
daughters like kids, allowed them to be little girls. Richard stopped sending
his daughters to national junior tennis tournaments when the Williams were ten
years old, as he wanted them to grow slowly and focus on schoolwork.
Experiences of racism also influenced this decision; Ashe had heard white
parents talk about the Williams sisters in a derogatory manner during tournaments.
At that time, Williams had a 46-3 record on the United States Tennis
Association Junior Tour and was ranked number one among under ten players in Florida.
In 1995, when Williams was in the 9th grade, her father pulled his daughters
out of Macy's Academy and took over all coaching at their home. When Serena
Williams was asked in 2000 whether it would have been more beneficial for them
to have followed the normal path of playing regularly on the junior circuit,
she responded, and I quote, everyone does different things. I think for Venus
and I, we just attempted different road, and it worked for us.
